THE OPPORTUNITY

Milestone anniversaries present a rare opportunity. When approached thoughtfully, they can do more than mark time. They can strengthen identity, deepen relationships, and invite stakeholders into a shared future.

Sanford Burnham Prebys, a leading independent nonprofit biomedical research institute, approached its 50th Anniversary with this understanding. The Institute wanted to celebrate five decades of game-changing scientific discovery while also using the moment strategically to support philanthropy, visibility, and long-term engagement.

Rather than treating the anniversary as a single event or standalone campaign, Sanford Burnham Prebys sought a cohesive marketing strategy that could unify brand expression, storytelling, and fundraising across the full anniversary year. They also identified the need for a 50th Anniversary visual identity, a unifying theme and tagline, and a cornerstone video that could anchor the campaign emotionally and strategically.

This work needed to honor the Institute’s legacy while staying firmly focused on the future, elevating current leadership and research, and clearly articulating why philanthropic partnership matters now and into the future.

THE GOAL

Our objective was to transform the year of Sanford Burnham Prebys’ 50th anniversary into a unifying moment that aligned internal teams, resonated with donors and partners, and positioned the Institute for its next chapter.

THE RESULTS

The 50th Anniversary campaign established a cohesive foundation for celebration, storytelling, and fundraising, grounded in clarity, alignment, and shared purpose.

Brand Development and Visual Identity

We developed a 50th Anniversary brand system designed to feel celebratory without overshadowing the Institute’s core identity. This included a dedicated anniversary logo, visual guidelines, and applications across event materials, environmental assets, merchandise, and branded touch points such as step-and-repeat backdrops.

The system was designed to scale across multiple events and uses throughout the anniversary year.

Brand Voice Guide and Key Messaging

To support consistency across teams and channels, we created a Brand Voice Guide and Key Messaging framework tailored to the anniversary. This work clarified how Sanford Burnham Prebys communicates about its legacy, its work, and the role of philanthropy as a catalyst for progress. The messaging ensured complex ideas could be communicated clearly and confidently to donors, partners, and broader audiences.

Tagline and Theme Development

After exploring multiple campaign directions, the final theme, “Advance Together,” emerged as the strongest expression of Sanford Burnham Prebys’ identity and aspirations. The theme reinforced collaboration, momentum, and shared impact, positioning donors and supporters as essential participants in the Institute’s future.

Video Production

As a centerpiece of the anniversary effort, we planned and produced a 50th Anniversary video that honors Sanford Burnham Prebys’ legacy while looking decisively forward. The video blends archival material, leadership perspectives, and storytelling to highlight impact and invite viewers into the next era of discovery. Designed for use across events, donor engagement, and digital platforms, the video functions as both a celebratory artifact and a fundraising tool.
